Gray and Machinery Health MonitoringWhile at Creare, I spent several weeks researching paper mills, while pursuing a lead from Hewlett Packard for a machinery health monitoring system for these facilities. I learned about the different stages and parts of a mill (the rolls, the felts, etc.) and the types of problems they develop, and how to use techniques like synchronous averaging and spectral profiles to detect problems before they become catastrophic. I interviewed knowledgable engineers from Weyerhauser and a Canadian paper mill and also talked extensively with an engineer at Hewlett Packard who had built such a system for Weyerhauser. I found this application area fascinating, but I could not raise proper funding. I'd still like to try it.Gray Abbott's Resume |
